Project Description
Spring and Fall collection was and is currently carried out across 8 mainland Mi’kmaw communities for all residents and community buildings. Household Hazardous Waste is at the forefront for these collection days as this is commonly the highest volume and most problematic for community members to dispose of.
The Green Communities team utilized two professional Hazardous Waste disposal companies to assist in the collection of household hazardous waste; Clean Harbours and Enviro-Systems, who recycle, re-purpose and properly dispose of hazardous waste collected. Other non-traditional items that aren’t collected during scheduled curbside pickup are also accounted for and collected as our goal was to not turn any community member away who is trying to properly divert their waste. For these collections, there were two methods used during these events. One Method was end of driveway pick-up from each resident’s house, and the other method was a drop off (drive-thru) site where residents could pull up in their vehicle and dispose of the waste onsite.

* Additional collection: one barrel of small propane cylinders, three fire extinguishers, 920L of motor oil and approximately 816Kg of tires.
Project Outputs:
- Household Hazardous Waste Events like this one here in Millbrook First Nation provides a need for collection of these items to mainland Mi’kmaw communities that don’t have the means to properly dispose of this waste.
- Some communities are either geographically not accessible, making disposal unfeasible, and or simply don’t have the means of getting these items to a proper drop off location.
