Waste Management in the Flood Impacted Little Saskatchewan First Nation
  • Location: Little Saskatchewan First Nation, MB
  • Project Partners: Little Saskatchewan First Nation, Indigenous Services Canada and the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources
Project Description
During 2019-2020, the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources (CIER) was tasked with providing short term waste management support to flood-impacted communities in the Interlake Region. Under the direction of ISC, CIER focused its efforts primarily on Little Saskatchewan First Nation (LSFN). CIER undertook research and outreach to LSFN community members, ISC and other stakeholders to examine waste servicing options; coordinated training for waste management staff; researched equipment (e.g. household garbage and recycling bins); and, worked with LSFN staff to identify needs and priorities of the community. CIER provided support to LSFN for short term waste management planning for a new transfer station waste management system in the newly constructed community following the First Nations evacuation in 2011.
