Project Description
The Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources, in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada First Nation Solid Waste Management Initiative (Manitoba Region) invited First Nations from across Manitoba to participate in the 2019 Seventh Generation Waste Warriors Project.
The four communities who were accepted into the project were Canupawakpa Dakota Nation, Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation, Lake Manitoba First Nation and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Each community selected two youth (and a chaperone) and two young adults (under thirty) to learn about solid waste management and diversion. The participants worked together over the four workshops to design, plan, budget, and execute their own local waste diversion projects. Their journey has been documented in a film produced by Indigenous filmmakers, Code Breaker Films. The film is available on CIER’s YouTube Channel “CIERWorld”!
Each of our workshops were zero-waste as much as possible; participants were provided with feast bags with reusable plates, cutlery, water bottles, and dish towels. They washed their dishes after each meal, which cut down the amount of waste we produced – very little disposable and single use plates, cups or cutlery were used.
We give special thanks to each of the communities for their amazing hospitality and our funder, Indigenous Services Canada
